Starting a new coaching relationship with a CEO often reveals that they are overwhelmed and unsatisfied with their role. The CEO position can be a difficult job, with too many demands and not enough time in the day. However, it's important to approach the job with intention and set clear boundaries. This leads to a sustainable and fulfilling CEO role that you excel at and love.
To get there, follow the Five Rs:
- Remove: Get rid of tasks, responsibilities, processes, and people that bring you down or don't add value to the enterprise. Ask yourself if you dread doing certain parts of your job and if someone else could do it or if it can be outsourced. If there are people in your company that you don't enjoy working with, consider if they should remain.
- Reinforce: Focus on what you love most about your role and what you're uniquely qualified to do. Determine which tasks contribute to increasing enterprise value and delegate more responsibility to high potential employees that fit with your company's culture and values.
- Reframe: Our perceptions of the world are subjective. Reframe your mindset to see your days and company progress in a more positive and energizing light. A daily gratitude practice can help you thrive, even on the toughest days.
- Remind: Regularly go back to your vision and mission and review your statements daily to stay motivated and focused.
- Rest: The startup journey is a long one, and it's important to prioritize rest. Get at least 7 hours of quality sleep each night to avoid burnout.
This process is cyclical and should be repeated regularly. By following these practices, you'll define, own, and live a CEO role that harnesses your strengths, maximizes your ability to add value, and is deeply fulfilling. Although it won't be easy, it can and should be enjoyable and rewarding every day.
